A day in the life of … Jade Kelly, underwriter, Accord Mortgages

My alarm clock rings at …

… 7am, to get up and get ready for work, which starts at 8am.

I’m not very early in the morning, so every extra minute in bed counts – I even have my coffee in a “to go” mug!

My role is currently based …

… Between our lovely new office in Broadoak in Peterborough (which we only moved into in March of this year) and our home.

I like to be in the office; there is a great atmosphere and, when the Covid rules allow it, I can’t wait to have more people around. It will be nice to take full advantage of the new colleagues area, with billiards and arcade games.

Homework is …

… A nice change! Flexibility adds to the work / life balance.

Taking on a new role during the pandemic has been …

… Easier than I expected. Of course, it was a little intimidating to quit a previous job in the middle of a pandemic, but Accord made the transition so smooth. My team could not have been more welcoming and supportive.

I wanted to become an underwriter because …

… As a mortgage broker before, I was very analytical and always preferred the in-depth work that came with helping people buy a home.

I worked with Accord during this time and, when an underwriting opportunity presented itself, I jumped at the opportunity to learn more about the process on the other side of the fence, this time by making the decisions. I love being an underwriter because you really get to know your customers.

Something that surprised me about my job is…

… Since no two applications are identical. There is so much variety between the applications I take on, the mortgage brokers I work with, and the clients we help.

It keeps you on your toes, keeps your mind busy and focused, and makes every application interesting.

My typical day includes …

… Checking my email when I get to work, then seeing what the current pipeline looks like for new nominees and policy decision nominations.

Throughout the day, I work on a mixture of progressing my own applications to an offer and accepting new ones. There are many phone calls to brokers to discuss cases in more detail and provide updates throughout.

My favorite work memory is …

… Generally social! I take pride in helping people find accommodation, and that brings satisfaction to my day-to-day work. But Accord is really good with employer recognition and engagement, and we do some fun things in our teams. There is always something to look forward to in the calendar, which gives us the opportunity to relax with colleagues and get to know each other better.

An advantage of work is …

… Help people improve their financial situation, support them in their day-to-day life and help them buy their home.

A common misconception about my job is that …

… That the requirements for getting a mortgage can be difficult, stringent, and very black and white, which I have come across many times as a broker. However, as underwriters, we do everything we can to help clients get their mortgage offers.

It is very common for us to talk to brokers and get more detailed explanations of the causes of certain situations in order to have a better understanding.

We always apply common sense to our lending decisions.

To relax after work, I …

… Walk my dog Lola and pick up where I left off in my most recent fiction book.

I am not a great cook. On days when my fiancé is unfortunate enough not to come home before I do, I try to cook dinner, but most of the time it ends up in Deliveroo!
